Road bikes

the road

In the Hautes-Alpes, cycling is a veritable myth. Every mountain pass tells an epic story, every bend bears the memory of the champions and dreamers who have tackled it. Cyclists don’t just pedal: they are part of a legend, the legend of a mountain that challenges but also uplifts. The roads wind around the summits like heroic ribbons, the switchbacks become initiation rites, and the descent an almost sacred reward. In this universe where effort mingles with the eternity of landscapes, cycling transcends sport: it becomes a shared heritage.

Highways,
endless journeys

Beyond the passes, itineraries on foot, horseback, road bike or gravel connect the valleys like threads of adventure. Every bend of the Durance à véloof the Route Napoléon or the Route des Grandes Alpes, opens up a new setting: sparkling glaciers, suspended villages, roaring torrents. On these routes, the bike becomes the key to exploring a vast, living territory. Far from the rush of time, every stage is a story, every kilometer a discovery.

The great passes,
cathedrals of the road

Izoard, Granon, Galibier, Agnel, Lautaret, Vars, Noyer… these names sound like legends. To climb a pass in the Hautes-Alpes is to experience an intimate battle between the shadows of the forests, the ruggedness of the slopes and the call of the peaks. At the summit, it’s not just the scenery that takes your breath away: it’s the pride of having crossed an invisible frontier.

The Tour de France,

When the Tour crosses the Hautes-Alpes, the roads are ablaze, the bells ring out in the hamlets, the crowds throng the roadsides. We don’t just watch a race: we experience a shared epic. The champions write their legend, but every spectator, every amateur cyclist, takes away a piece of this epic breath. Proof of the beauty of the roads in the Hautes-Alpes: the Tour de France returns almost every year.

Cols réservés,
the mountain is yours

What if, for one morning, the mountains became yours? With the Cols réservés operation, the legendary roads of the Hautes-Alpes are closed to motorized vehicles. Silence. Just the clatter of the chain, the beat of the heart and the landscape opened up to cyclists. It’s a rare experience: climbing a pass like a champion, but in absolute peace and quiet. A simple luxury, available to all.

Reserved collars

Every summer, the Cols réservés operation transforms the department’s legendary roads into huge open-air cycle paths. How does it work? On specific mornings, motorized traffic is closed, making way for bikes, calves and the simple pleasure of climbing without the noise of an engine in your ears.

Tour de France

It’s hard to imagine the Grande Boucle without the Hautes-Alpes, where the mountains become a merciless judge and a machine of legends. Since the very first Tour de France in 1911, the département has established itself as a key venue for the Tour, which over the years has become an unmissable event where champions are applauded as much as the region is celebrated.

Cycle races

There’s no better way to kick-start the season than by taking part in one of the major local events: from the 6 jours cyclo de Vars to the cyclosportive du Noyer, not to mention other calf-boosting classics, each race is an opportunity to combine effort, conviviality and breathtaking scenery. You come to compete against the clock, but you leave with the certainty of having ridden on exceptional roads.
